I must say that Mountain Dew/Pepsi has come up with the most brilliant marketing scheme in the history of soda pop. I absolutely love this Mountain Dew Livewire stuff, but it’s only available for a couple months during the summer. This way I only get it for a couple months and then they have to take it away and torture me for the remaining winter months, then when it comes back for summer the anticipation is so great that I buy a ton of it. I hear so many people say “Why don’t they have this stuff year round? I’d get it all the time.” Well that idea that you can’t get it all year round, makes it more appealing and makes you want it more while it’s available. How brilliant, yet so mean.
I saw some of the convention last night. I was sure to catch John McCain’s speech, as he’s probably my favorite politician. I’m sure I’ve said that before. I was pretty happy with his speech, he didn’t really talk about social issues but that’s probably because everyone there would have disagreed with him.I don’t just like him most because I seem to agree with him on everything, I like him because he’s a free-thinker, he’s willing to cross the party line. He doesn’t brag about his history in the military, which if you know anything about him is much more honorable than a lot of people’s. The sad thing is, he’ll probably never be a candidate for President, or even vice president, because he doesn’t follow his party on everything. Even though I think he’d have an excellent shot, because I think he appeals to millions of Americans who don’t have any party loyalty and like me hate the very idea of political parties, who are gut-sick of hearing each side bickering with eachother and claiming they’re correct on everything and perfect about everything and the other side is completely wrong. I liked how McCain said that Democrats are his friends, a very optimistic and mature thing to say. You don’t hear much of that coming from the other side.
I didn’t really like all the focus on 9/11, though. I would say 9/11 definitely has more relevance than Kerry’s service in Vietnam 30 years ago, which the Democrats seemed to focus on in their convention. I was glad to hear him talk so much about foreign policy because I think he hits the nail on the head, and I especially found his shot at Michael Moore amusing, saying “don’t let disingenuous film makers tell you otherwise.”
McCain was about all I had time to watch, and is probably all I will watch all week except for maybe Cheney’s and Bush’s. The only speeches I watched from the DNC were Clinton’s, Edward’s, and Kerry’s, so I’m giving equal attention so I don’t feel so bad. I have to say though that I’m still just a lot happier with the optimistic platform the Republicans are taking, whereas Democrats seem to be taking a platform of anger and hate.
For some reason I found myself watching the movie “Bubble Boy” late last night. It’s one of those movies that is so horrible that you can’t seem to change the channel. Basically this kid has to live in a bubble because his immune system doesn’t work and so germs could kill him. But I predicted within 5 minutes of watching the movie, that he really didn’t need the bubble and it was just his mom being overly protective. I was so dissapointed to find out in the end that I was right. It seems to be built on the same template the movie “Say It Isn’t So” is. You have the psychotic, over protective mother, and the quiet father with a guilty conscious who ultimately ends up breaking the news in the end. Same story, who do they think they’re fooling?
The Passion of the Christ comes out on video today, I’m not going to rent it right away because I just don’t think I have the time to sit down and watch it. I never went and saw it in the theatre so I still haven’t seen it. Maybe later. If you haven’t seen the Bourne Identity/Bourne Supremacy movies yet, I would definitely recommend it. They were awesomely written movies, and Matt Damon did a really good job. Easily on my top 10 list for best movies of the summer. Spider Man 2 was definitely one of the best of the summer, and Shrek 2 was great. But I think “Troy” was my favorite movie of the summer. Hopefully it will come out on video soon, I’m dying to see it again. It was an excellent movie, I recommend it to everyone. 50 First Dates and The Butterfly Effect were also good movies, don’t quite measure up to the others I mentioned but I definitely recommend them. Lord of the Rings was also a good series, didn’t get into it as much as many people, though.
I’m pretty excited about what’s to come this fall and winter. My favorite show “The Family Guy” is coming back in January with all new episodes, as well as a straight-to-video movie in November. I also found out that Kevin Smith is making a sequel to his awesome movie “Clerks” so I am thrilled about that. Plus Episode 3 of Star Wars is coming out in 2005, which is something I’ve really been looking forward to. I don’t care what anyone says, I think the new Star Wars movies are pretty good. Probably not as good as the originals, but still pretty good.
Lots of work to do, so I’m going to get going on that. Talk to you tomorrow.
