JulFrom One Extreme To Another
A pretty nice weekend, it was; not much else to say about it, other than frame it, hang it, and name it July. Upper 90’s were the temps all weekend, a lot of humidity as usual, and the sun seemed a lot brighter than normal for some reason. We’ve had enough of those days lately, it’s been in the upper 90s for about a week now, and just as I predicted everyone’s already forgotten about the chill of June. Well I haven’t forgotten, and I’m glad it’s behind us. For most people it only takes two weeks of stern heat in July like this to think it’s been perfect since the snow melted. It’s a good thing, this self-deception; we actually grow tired of warm weather in August, and pray for a cool September. And we get it, too. Which instantly makes us want warm weather again, and then we get that, as well. Looking ahead like this gives me comfort, makes it all seem like a big long scheme, a favorite book I reread even though I know the plot and the ending. If only I could predict every other aspect of my life in the same way.
Well, what I can predict is that our electric bill will four times higher than usual this month from having the air conditioning on for a week straight. Man, that sucks. A month ago I wanted warmer weather, now I want it to cool off. There’s just no pleasing me is there? Well, maybe if there were some middle ground. We just go from one extreme to the next here in Minnesota. Extreme cold to extreme heat.
My brother came to town this weekend, by surprise; we had a nice birthday celebration dinner at Tony Roma’s (I love that place) and we went to the Car Craft show at the state fairgrounds in St Paul. We spent the whole day Saturday checking out over 4,000 muscle cars entered mostly by local people. There were some really cool cars, like the camaro pictured to the right. There were also lots of old Mustangs, Chevelles, GTOs and other old cars to look at. I snapped a lot of pictures, I’ll put up a gallery on the site sometime soon. One thing that really bothered me about it was that there were really no requirements for the entrants. There were people entering their stock Dodge Neons and new Ford Mustangs to show off. Come on, if we wanted to see that stuff we’d go to a car dealer. The point of the show is supposed to be for people who build muscle cars, hot rods, or restore old classic cars. Then of course there’s the kids showing off their tricked out four-cylinders which they’ve done nothing more to than slap on a huge loud muffler, huge spoiler, a K&N air filter, and of course some stickers advertising performance parts which usually aren’t even installed in the car.
I know, it’s just kids following a fad started by Hollywood when they released that unbearably awful film “The Fast and the Furious.” How on earth a movie which such awful writing and acting could hypnotize millions of teenage boys into spending thousands of their pizza delivery money on pointless aftermarket junk for their usually Honda or Toyota brand economy cars just boggles my mind.
But now I need to be off to bed to rest up for another exciting week of work. See-ya later.
